A Skeptic’s Secret Word, Revealed at the End of the Show

Every show, someone finds me afterward and says, "That was great. No idea how you did it. But I'm still a skeptic." Fair enough. It didn't happen to them. So now I find a skeptic at the start of the night and make sure it does. Jessie put a hand up when I asked who in the room thought mind reading was nonsense. The job was simple: think of one word that means something personal, write it down, and seal it in an initialed envelope that sits on stage, untouched, for the entire show. Then sit back and stay skeptical. Right up until the end. The word can't be random. A pet's name, a honeymoon spot, an inside joke. Guessing a random word is a trick. Guessing the word that matters to someone is a moment. This routine started as a way to tie my show together, and it's been my closer ever since. Filmed live at a corporate holiday party in Calgary, December 2025. Jeff Newman is a Calgary-based mentalist who performs at corporate events, galas, conferences, and theatres across Canada. If you've got a room full of skeptics, I'd love to meet them.
